Blairgowrie Artist Studio
Nestled at the foot of the Snowy Mountains, the Blairgowrie artist studio project by Cradle Design transforms an ageing garden tennis court into a serene, modernist haven. Surrounded by mature pine trees, the site exudes a sense of tranquillity and natural beauty, with the scent of pine needles and the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze.
The studio exudes simplicity and functionality, designed to accommodate large paintings up to 14 meters long. The space is bathed in natural light, thanks to expansive glazing that offers stunning views of the garden and woodlands beyond. The light dances across the reclaimed granite walls, highlighting their rich textures and history.
Inside, the studio is a blend of modern architecture and sustainable design. The underfloor hydraulic heating provides a comforting warmth underfoot, while the solar hot water and rainwater capture systems ensure the building operates efficiently. Cross-ventilation keeps the air fresh and invigorating, perfect for creative inspiration.
The interior layout is meticulously planned, with a separate storage area for artwork, a substantial reference library, an administration area, a kitchen for washing brushes, and a shower room. The use of recycled materials is evident throughout, from the stainless-steel strips in the engineered floorboards that echo the historical grid of the tennis court, to the long bench made from reclaimed timbers of a local bridge.
The studio space, with its reclaimed granite walls, exudes a sense of humility and honesty, while the storage and ancillary spaces, defined by horizontal banded fair-faced blockwork, offer a disciplined contrast. The north-facing courtyard, aligned with the court grid, provides a peaceful outdoor space, perfect for contemplation and inspiration.
