Balgowlah House 01

The refurbishment and extension of this 100-year-old stone cottage has transformed it into a multi-storey, contemporary dwelling with breathtaking views of Sydney Harbour. The original structure, once small and compartmentalised, has been reimagined by Cradle to embrace modern living.

As you step into the new open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, the scent of fresh timber flooring fills the air, blending seamlessly with the soft, natural materials used throughout. The black polished concrete floor in the living room, cool and smooth underfoot, contrasts beautifully with the warmth of the under-floor heating system, providing both comfort and a striking visual appeal.

Ascending to the first-floor master bedroom, the elevated position offers a panoramic view of Sydney Harbour Heads, a sight that captivates the senses. The large skylight above the bed invites the night sky in, perfect for romantic stargazing.

The extension, designed as a counterbalance to the existing Gable end facing the southern garden, uses reclaimed painted bricks. These bricks, with their weathered texture and history, add a sense of solidity and sustainability, regulating the internal temperature naturally. The walls, finished in a clean white paint, create a blank canvas for the owners to personalise with vibrant textiles, fabrics, and art.

Every detail of this project, from the timber flooring in the kitchen and dining areas to the casual wraparound window seat, has been thoughtfully designed to enhance the living experience. The result is a harmonious blend of old and new, where the charm of the original cottage meets the elegance of contemporary design, all set against the stunning backdrop of Sydney Harbour.

What owners Jane and Jon love: “We love the simplicity of the design which cleverly provides the space we were lacking in the original cottage. The house now has an amazing flow with the sunken new living room central to the garden.”

What Architect Paul Lucas loves: “I love that the house extension has made the house whole, it now feels complete and a home to be enjoyed.”
