Lion Malt Shovel

Cradle Design, transformed the Lion Malt Shovel brewery trade and tasting bar into a space that honours its historic roots. The new interiors are a sensory delight, blending the old with the new in a harmonious tribute to the brewery’s legacy.

As you step into the venue, the first thing you notice is the high-ceiling volume of the first-floor space, which creates an airy and open atmosphere. The polished timber floors gleam underfoot, their rich, warm tones inviting you to explore further. The bar itself is a masterpiece of design, with repurposed meeting tables that can be raised to form bar tables, adding a touch of versatility and innovation.

The exposed brickwork, sandblasted to reveal its raw beauty, provides a textured backdrop that contrasts beautifully with the sleek copper piping running throughout the bar display areas. These pipes not only serve a functional purpose but also echo the adjacent brewing vats, creating a cohesive and immersive experience.

The industrial truss roof, left exposed, adds to the venue’s rustic charm, while the carefully planned lighting casts a warm glow, highlighting the intricate details of the design. The aroma of freshly brewed beer wafts through the air, mingling with the scent of polished wood and the faint hint of metal from the copper fixtures.

Navigating the space, you can feel the history embedded in the walls, each element thoughtfully chosen to reflect the brewery’s storied past. Despite the challenges of access and the need to keep the brewery operational during the refurbishment, the project was completed on time, to a high standard, and within budget, thanks to the exemplary planning and collaboration between the project team and builders.

The Malt Shovel project stands as a testament to Cradle Design’s ability to create spaces that are not only functional but also rich in sensory experiences, making it a proud addition to their portfolio with Lion.
